Physiotherapy Home Visits in Northamptonshire
A full physiotherapy appointment brought to you when travelling to clinic is not currently realistic or appropriate.
For some patients, getting to clinic is simply not practical in the early stages of recovery.
This is most commonly the case following surgery, where driving restrictions, mobility limitations, or immediate post-operative guidance make travel difficult even though physiotherapy is still needed.
In those situations, I offer physiotherapy home visits on a selective basis. This is not a reduced version of treatment. It is essentially the same clinical service I provide in clinic, but taken on the road.
I bring my own portable treatment bed and the equipment needed for physiotherapy assessment and rehabilitation. In practical terms, it is the clinic carried by me.
That said, this service is not intended for every type of housebound or immobile patient. As a single practitioner, I have to be realistic about what is safe and appropriate for me to deliver alone in a home environment.
What Is a Physiotherapy Home Visit?
A physiotherapy home visit is exactly what it sounds like: a full physiotherapy appointment carried out in your home rather than in clinic.
Appointments are one hour long, matching the equivalent land-based clinic appointment.
The aim is the same as it would be in clinic:
-
assess the problem properly
-
establish what is driving the symptoms or limitation
-
guide treatment and rehabilitation
-
help move recovery forward with a clear and sensible plan
The only real difference is the setting.
I bring the treatment couch and the equipment needed, so this should still feel like a proper clinical appointment rather than a watered-down compromise.
Who Are Home Visits Most Appropriate For?
This service is mainly intended for patients who are temporarily unable to attend clinic, most often because of:
-
post-operative driving restrictions
-
early recovery after surgery
-
short-term mobility limitations
-
situations where travelling to clinic is not yet sensible or realistic
In other words, this is usually a service for people who would normally attend clinic, but currently cannot.
That distinction matters.
If your situation is misrepresented in order to obtain a home visit, I reserve the right to refuse to carry out that session, and the full appointment fee together with any additional home visit charges will remain payable in full.
Who Are Home Visits Not Intended For?
I do not generally offer this service for patients who are chronically immobile, unable to mobilise safely, or who require broader physical support in the home simply for day-to-day mobility or transfers.
That is not because those patients do not deserve good care. It is because, as a single practitioner, it is not always safe or appropriate for me to provide that type of service alone in a home environment.
Where that level of support is needed, it is usually more appropriate to access input via:
-
an organisation with multiple practitioners
-
a provider specifically set up for more dependent home-based care
-
NHS community services, where appropriate
That is the honest answer.
What Can Be Done During a Home Visit?
A home visit can include much of what would normally happen during a clinic-based physiotherapy assessment or physiotherapy session.
Depending on the case, that may include:
-
detailed assessment
-
post-operative review
-
mobility assessment
-
exercise prescription and progression
-
gait advice
-
rehabilitation planning
-
hands-on treatment where appropriate
-
guidance on activity, pacing and recovery
-
advice on safe progression back towards normal function
Because the session is still a full hour, there is enough time to assess the problem properly and do something useful with it.
What I Bring With Me
or home visits, I bring my own portable treatment bed along with the equipment needed for assessment and rehabilitation. All I need is a large enough space to set it up and work in safetly.
This means the appointment is designed to feel like a proper physiotherapy session, not just an informal conversation in your living room.
Obviously, a home environment will never be identical to a clinic room, but the aim is still to deliver a professional, structured and clinically useful appointment.
How Much Does a Home Visit Cost?
Home visits carry an additional fee compared with clinic-based appointments.
This is because they involve travel time, off-site setup, and the practicalities of taking clinic equipment out on the road.
The cost is made up of:
-
an additional mileage charge, depending on location and ease of access
Because travel demands vary, the additional amount is quoted on an enquiry-by-enquiry basis so please complete a contact form with as much detail as you are comfortable doing so, and I can give you an individualised quote.
That keeps it fairer than pretending every visit costs the same regardless of distance or logistics.
Physiotherapy Home Visit FAQ's
1) Who are home visits mainly for?
Home visits are mainly intended for patients who would normally attend clinic, but are temporarily unable to do so, most often because of post-operative restrictions or short-term recovery issues.
They are not generally intended as a long-term solution for patients requiring more dependent mobility support in the home.
2) Is the appointment shorter than a normal clinic session?
No.
Home visit appointments are one hour long, matching the equivalent clinic-based appointment.
3) What happens during a home visit?
A home visit can include much of what would usually happen in a physiotherapy assessment or physiotherapy session, including assessment, rehabilitation planning, exercise progression, mobility guidance and treatment where appropriate.
4) Do you bring equipment with you?
Yes.
I bring my own portable treatment bed and the equipment needed for assessment and rehabilitation, so the appointment is designed to function as a proper clinical session rather than a reduced alternative.
5) Can I book a home visit if I am generally immobile or need help with everyday transfers?
Usually not.
As a single practitioner, I do not generally offer home visits for patients who require broader dependent mobility support or more complex physical assistance in the home. In those cases, a provider with multiple practitioners or NHS community input is usually the more appropriate route.
6) How much extra does a home visit cost?
There is a set home visit fee available on the fees page, plus an additional mileage charge depending on location and ease of access.
The exact additional cost is quoted individually based on the details of the enquiry.
7) Are home visits only for post-operative patients?
No, but post-operative recovery is one of the most common reasons.
The main principle is that the service is for patients who are temporarily unable to attend clinic, where a home-based appointment is clinically sensible and practical.
8) How do I arrange a home visit?
The best way is to contact me via the contact form with some brief details about your situation, location and why a home visit may be needed.
I can then advise whether it is likely to be appropriate and explain any extra fee relating to travel.
Why Should You Choose Chris Heywood Physio
Choosing the right physiotherapist can make a significant difference when dealing with pain, injury, or persistent movement problems. The most important thing when seeking help is finding a practitioner you trust—someone who is honest, responsible, and clear about your diagnosis, the treatment you really need, and whether any follow-up appointments are necessary.
I’m not here to poach you from another therapist, but if you’re looking for a new physiotherapist in Northamptonshire or simply want a second opinion, here’s why many people choose to work with me (read my reviews):
Over 25 years of experience & proven expertise
With 25+ years of hands-on physiotherapy experience, I’ve built a trusted reputation for clinical excellence and evidence-based care. My approach combines proven techniques with the latest research, so you can feel confident you’re in safe, skilled hands.
Longer appointments for better results
No two people—or injuries—are the same. That’s why I offer 60-minute one-to-one sessions, giving us time to:
-
Thoroughly assess your condition
-
Provide focused, effective treatment
-
Explain what’s really going on in a clear, simple way
Your treatment plan is tailored specifically to you, aiming for long-term results, not just temporary relief.
Honest advice & support you can trust
I will always tell you what is best for you — even if that means you need fewer sessions, not more. My goal is your recovery and long-term wellbeing, not keeping you coming back unnecessarily.
Because I operate an independent practice with low overheads, I do not work to preset business targets based on a number of sessions per patient. Treatment recommendations are based on clinical need only, not on maximising appointments.

Helping you take control of your recovery
I believe the best outcomes happen when you understand your body. I’ll explain your condition clearly, give you practical tools for self-management, and step in with expert hands-on treatment when it’s genuinely needed.
Independent clinical care
Chris Heywood Physio operates as an independent physiotherapy practice rather than a high-volume clinic model.
This allows treatment decisions to focus entirely on what is most appropriate for the patient.
The aim is always to understand the problem properly and provide clear, effective physiotherapy that helps you return to normal activity as quickly and safely as possible.
Contact Me
Alongside private practice, I also work on Mondays and Tuesdays as an advanced physiotherapist in a First Contact Practitioner (FCP) in Musculoskeletal Primary Care within the NHS, assessing, diagnosing, and triaging patients without the need for a GP appointment.
The easiest way to see my private physiotherapy appointment availability in real time, and book, is to visit the book an appointment page. If you need to make contact directly for questions and queries you are very welcome to call, but when I am in clinic my phone is always on silent so I can give my full attention to the patient I am seeing at the time. For this reason, it is usually quicker to reach me via the contact form, email or WhatsApp, where I can often read and respond in gaps.
Whichever way you get in touch, I will respond as soon as possible — and during the working week that is almost always the same day.
